Umbwe route is the most challenging route and can successful climb by strong climbers.

Its shortest and steepest route with less time for acclimatization. It’s less scenic and has less summit success rate.

ITINERARY IN FULL

DAY 1: UMBWE GATE TO UMBWE CAMP

DISTANCE: 11KM/7MILES

TIME: 5-7HRS

After  the  park formalities,  start  your  trek  through  rainforest  to  your  first  camp  Umbwe  Camp

Evening: Diner and overnight at Umbwe Camp.

 

DAY 2: UMBWE CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP

DISTANCE: 6KM/4MILES

TIME: 4-5HRS

Today you leave the rainforest behind and hike through the open moorland habitat the semi-desert zone to Barranco Camp which lies in the Great Barranco Valley. The valley offers a stunning view of the sloping landscape and the snow – white peak.

Evening: Diner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

DAY 3: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP

DISTANCE: 5KM/3MILES

TIME: 4-5HRS

Start slowly crossing the floor of the great Barranco Valley and up the Barranco wall in alpine desert vegetation. At the top of the wall, you’re above the clouds and have stunning views of the Southern Ice Fields and the summit. Continue to Barranco camp

Evening: Diner and Overnight.

 

DAY 4: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

DISTANCE: 4KM/2MILES

TIME: 3-4HRS

After breakfast at the camp, hike to  the  last camp  before  summit.  The Barafu Camp, here  you  will  go  to bed  very  early   for  a midnight  woke up  ready  to  hike  to the  summit.

Evening: Diner and overnight at Barafu  camp.

DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK TO MWEKA CAMP

DISTANCE: 15KM/10MILES

TIME: 10-12HRS

Today  is  a summit  day! Here  we  have  two part,  one  from Barafu  Camp  to Uhuru  Peaks   the  highest  point  of the  mountain  which  takes about  7 hours  and  another  from  Uhuru  peaks  to  Mweka  camp  which  takes  around 5hours. You  will  wake  up  at  midnight, have  a cup  of  coffee  at the  camp  and  trail  for  about  six  hour  to  Stella  point  at the  crater  rim  then  trek  on the  snow  covered  trail   for  about  an hour  to reach  the  uhuru  peak! Now you are at the highest point of Africa! Take enough photos  here  before  you  descent  to  the  next  camp  that  will  take  you   about  5 hours

Evening: Diner  and  overnight at  Mweka  Camp.

 

DAY 6: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE

DISTANCE: 10KM/6MILES

TIME: 3-4HRS

This is your last day on the mountain! Trail  through  the forest  to  Mweka  gate,  here  you  will  find  your  driver  waiting  to  pick  you  up  and  drop  you  to  a close by  lodge  for  shower , a nice  hot  lunch  and  a cold  drink  in a swimming  pool.
