Mount Meru is the fifth highest mount in Africa, and second highest in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro. It has different vegetation zone from Montane forest , the higher you ascent you to a Moorland and as you approach summit into an alpine terrain to ash cone . Climbing mount Meru give a unique wilderness experience given that its located in the heart of Arusha National park you will come across large game such as Buffalo, Giraffes, Antelopes, Baboons, colobus monkeys and hundreds of bird species and for this reason one has to be accompanied by armed park ranger during the trip despite presence of our own guides. Meru is mostly used as an acclimatization and warm up for Kilimanjaro climb though it’s a few days trek its very steep and can be challenging to some climbers. Its accommodation is in an equipped mountain huts comfortable for a night stay.

ITINERARY IN FULL
DAY 1: MOMELLA GATE TO MIRIKAMBA HUT
DISTANCE: 6KM/4MILES
TIME: 3 -4HRS
Arrive at Momella gate for registration and a signed your armed park Ranger to accompany you. As you start the trek you will get to have the best view of Momela Lakes and Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will encounter wildlife such as waterbucks, giraffes, buffalos, Antelopes, monkeys, baboons, warthogs and more.
Arrive at Miriakamba hut for meals and overnight.
DAY 2: MIRIKAMBA HUT TO SADDLE HUT
DISTANCE: 7KM/4.5MILES
TIME: 3 -4HRS
Today a trek will take you through a steep path along the ridge of the saddle; here you will have a spectacular view of the Meru crater and the ash cone. On your way you might see Blue monkeys, bushbucks, red dykes buffaloes and hyena. After a rest at saddle hut, afternoon hike to little Meru for spectacular views before sunset .
Evening: Meals and overnight at Saddle Hut.
DAY 3: SADDLE HUT TO SOCIALIST PEAK TO MIRIAKAMBA HUT
DISTANCE: 20KM/13MILES
TIME: 10 -12HRS
Today we have two parts on our hike. One ascent from Saddle hut to Socialist peak the highest point of big Meru and another a descent from the peak to Miriakamba Hut. It will be a midnight wake up, served a light snacks and start your trek through gravel and rocky ridges to the summit, this will take about 5-6 hours . Here you will have a breathtaking of Meru crater and the ash cone then descend to Meriakamba hut
Meals and overnight at Meriakamba Hut.
DAY 4: MIRIKAMBA HUT TO MOMELLA GATE
DISTANCE: 14KM/9MILES
TIME: 6 -7HRS
Today is your last day to wave for Meru , After breakfast , descend through Montane forest and here you will be seeing the forest from the above that gives you a quite spectacular view. You will encounter wildlife and birds before you reach Momella gate where your drive will be waiting for you and transfer to a lodge/hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
